Study and Work Opportunities for Canadians Abroad

Living in a country founded on the spirit of exploration and adventure, Canadians, not surprisingly, have an innate appetite for travel. We love to visit new and far-flung places, and introduce ourselves and Canada through the Maple Leaves that adorn our backpacks and serve as our unique calling cards to people around the world.

That simple contact between us and them serves as a mini-lesson in international education.

Yet there's a whole world out there to learn and a host of study opportunities around the globe from which to choose.

Given the seemingly endless options, the selection remains a highly personal choice. Do you wish to broaden your horizons by pursuing study driven by your own interests or to further your education based on specific academic or career goals? Where do you wish to travel? Are you open to learning new languages and new cultures? For how long do you wish to remain outside Canada?

They are all major decisions and the pool from which to choose is vast.

CBIE has prepared a primer, entitled What in the World is Going On, which can assist you in exploring the world of international study. Sections deal with the importance of immersing yourself in the culture of another country and the valuable education one gains from such experiences; assessing one's suitability for overseas study; and what's out there. A lot, as it happens.

Surf around this site and you will find links to sites that offer international study and exchange programs around the world. Soon you will discover the possibilities are nearly as limitless as your imagination.

To assist you in narrowing down your search, we have divided the field into various categories.

You can locate international education learning organizations that are based in Canada or outside Canada.

Information on SCHOLARSHIPS, FELLOWSHIPS, and GRANTS can be found here. To obtain details about INTERNSHIPS, EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION, AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS, click here. If you are interested in STUDY ABROAD, LANGUAGE AND CULTURE STUDY, go here. Information on paid and volunteer WORK OPPORTUNITIES can be found here. Meanwhile, our section on HOME-STAY PROGRAMS, including exchanges for young people under the age of 20, can be found here. But while our lists are extensive, they are by no means exhaustive.

If you are currently a student, a great place to locate information about global educational opportunities is on your campus. Visit your international office or awards officer and find out what exchanges, programs or links your school has with institutions abroad. Regularly scan bulletin boards and check with your own department or school for any new programs or exchanges being offered.

And don't forget to drop by the library, which should have university calendars from around the world and books that focus on studying abroad.
